Lost, alone and in failing health, Springer, an orphaned orca was found off the coast of Seattle. With death approaching her future, scientists worked diligently to rehabilitate her. She was put in an open-ocean pen and nursed back to health before reintroducing her into her pod. Springer is the first killer whale that has been captured in a debilitated state, brought back to health, released and successfully reunited with a pod. The above picture shows Springer, 11 years later, raising a calf of her own.
